The value of an all-in-one gadget
December 13th, 2009. Filed under: TechnologyWhen I first got my hands on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, I thought to myself “this baby can do it all!”. It serves as my mp3 player, video player, organizer, navigator, alarm clock, and to top it all off, it has touchscreen.

I’m in no way saying that this phone is better than an iPhone, but it has all these features that I am happy with, having lived with a primitive phone for two years previously. And I do actually use these features. So I really am happy with this phone, despite the limited availability of compatible applications.
One fine day, the hidden caveat of an all-in-one gadget revealed itself. I was using my phone to navigate via GPS to a place I have never been before, and have no other means of directions to. At the same time, I had to place a very urgent call. So I had to choose between missing an exit and getting in work-related trouble for not making that call.
The fact that my navigator and my phone is one and the same landed me into a tough spot. It doesn’t matter how I pulled through in the end, because I will still have to make these tough decisions every now and then.
But then again these situations do not arise very often. Most of the time, I only do one thing at a time with my phone. I’m just pointing out a real-life situation that can be a factor to consider when buying yourself a gadget.
