The fight for net neutrality
December 17th, 2006. Filed under: TechnologyApparently, there is a possible threat that the internet might be under a law which requires the service providers to CHOOSE which websites for you to access and nothing else, based on who pays them (or something like that. Learn it here.) Well, this issue applies to the United States so far. But who knows? Anything can happen.
I have found two noble websites that fights for net neutrality, an effort to keep the internet free to use for everybody with access. That’s the way it is now and look how fast we are progressing. Check out SaveTheInternetand WeAreTheWeb. Should this issue increase in severity, it just might affect the other parts of the world so I wish to let the Malaysians know about this.
I hope the Malaysian government don’t get any ‘ideas’. What do you think?

haven’t read up on this in a while, but far as i know it’s not to *block* access so much as to give priority to certain domains.

December 18th, 2006 at 10:14 pmProblem with Net Neutrality will affect us, but we will not have the power to do anything about it. Why? Because Net Neutrality is something that is conceived by the “owner” of the Internet, America. If you notice, most of the contents that everyone surf in is hosted in America, hence why we have so many high speed submarine cables to America. It’s really up to the American people to do their part to keep Internet free.
As for our Malaysian government, I doubt they can do anything about it. Why? Because our ISPs don’t really have any power to do it as it requires them to get paid by big domains that would probably not realize that Malaysia is even on Earth.
What does Net Neutrality do? Well, it limits bandwidth to certain domains and makes it slower/faster depending on how much those domain pay the ISP. Then again… it’s not as if our ISP do any great job at making our surfing experience good right?

Still, any entity that attempts to assume control over the internet in even small ways is susceptible to controversy. The internet belongs to the people. Thanks for your input, Noor Hidayat. Appreciate it.
