3 Basic Windows Startup Speed Tips
December 6th, 2006. Filed under: TipsThese three factors of Windows startup time are among the simplest and easy-to-fix ones. Some of us might have gone great depths to decrease loadtime but are you overlooking these things?
1. Startup programs
The most basic of basic. All you have to do is make sure that your startup folder in Start>>All Programs does not contain too many programs. Just delete the ones you don’t need/want. However, that folder does not list everything so you might need to dig deeper; clean it in your registry. Sometimes, the items remain in the folder and beneath it even after uninstalling, so read this to fix it.
2. Desktop clutter
Does your desktop look as messy as your room? It’s high time you clean it up. Start by deleting program shortcuts that you don’t normally use; like IMs because they start automatically. As for pictures and videos, sort them into My Documents; organize yourself. Also, some software installations put extra icons on your desktop, like ads and webpages. Delete those. This tip may not show a significant speed-up, but it helps.
3. Fonts
This may be a little known fact but the more fonts you have installed, the slower your computer starts up. One time I had 5000 fonts downloaded and installed; the result was horrendous. Go to C:/WINDOWS/Fonts and delete your artistic but seldom-used fonts. Make sure you back them up though, into a folder nearby like I do.
Now that’s three super simple tips I can give right now, for the super simple user. Enjoy.
