Criticisms and evils of marketing – Part 1

August 17th, 2006. Filed under: Essays

This is my research paper for my marketing class, which I got a pretty good grade for. I worked hard for this one! So enjoy it. It’s so massive I have to split it into two parts. I’ll release the second part another day.

Marketing, in any form, has existed and developed since the dawn of trade, the pursuit of profit. Now, many years on, it has become “an indispensable approach to doing business” (Palmer, 2004). Defined as the commercial functions involved in transferring goods from producer to consumer, it is grown as a medium through which the former communicates to the latter. In fact, advertising itself may turn out to be the best advertised product of all time (Cohen, 2002). As most other media have become, it is where both good and harm can spawn as a result of the intentions of those who employ the use of marketing. Like television and the internet, marketing is subject to misuse or abuse and therefore has gained criticism from various observant entities.

    Tips on applying for university

August 15th, 2006. Filed under: Articles

Sick and disgusted with tertiery education in Malaysia? (Not implying anything) Thinking of furthering your studies overseas? Here are some tips for those who are considering to apply.

    1. Make your decision

First and foremost, prior to almost every aspect to applying. Well duh. Decide exactly which university(s) you opt for. Depending on your current academic qualifications or what you plan to acquire, choose the country, then the university. USA? UK? Aussieland? Choose!

After that, pick your university. This part, in my opinion, is the most fun part. Lets say you pick USA. Goody! Go to libraries and bookstore to find directories of American universities. What people other than the universities themselves say about them would be more reliable. Savvy? I’d go for ‘TOP 100′ or ‘BEST OF’ and stuff like that, and make sure its up to date!

    2. University lockdown

Dont be stupid and eliminate from a list of thousands. Know what your criteria is! Whats your major? Whats your location preference? Eastside? Westside? How expensive is it? Can I meet the requirements? Rural? Suburban? Get hold of directories! And don’t easily fall prey to advertisements. As a marketing student myself, I’m telling you that whatever product that is heavily advertised is likely to have needed it. Harvard and Princeton don’t need to advertise much. Get it?

    I, novice scrabbler

August 8th, 2006. Filed under: Blog

I spent the last weekend at Taylor’s College for an inter-college Scrabble competition. This one is way more competitive than the other one in which I one a silver for. WAY more.

Check out my full statistics here.

It’s kinda funny how I fared in that competition. Against a national-rank 82 player I scored an awesome 371 but she won with a whopping 529. I lost to a skilled newcomer by 100 and he doesn’t even know how to spell ‘crescent’. Martin Teo and Ng Peng Sang, whom I lost badly to, both speak Mandarin as mother tongue and are in the top 100 national rank. My arse hurts from all the kicking and whooping.

But here’s a picture of a real good game I had against another newcomer.
    Scrabble with Woo Jin Wei

He could have won by just a bit with his Bingo “UNPIECED”. But for some reason, that word isn’t accepted in the SOWPODS dictionary we were using that day. It sounds a lot like a word, I almost accepted it. But if I did not challenge it, I would have lost. In honour of his attempt, I left his next finishing word “UNEPIC” unchallenged. There was no such word either. I think I regretted that, for my spread could be higher. I DEEPLY regretted not challenging Martin Teo’s word “FIXTS”, which I thought was valid because I challenged “FIXT”. Dannggg…

Scrabbling is fun! I want more competitions!! If any of you want to challenge me on isc.ro, my handle is Androfire.
