  • My first movie: “Mamak: A Malaysian Culture” on Youtube

April 1st, 2006. Filed under: Cool Stuff, Humour, Videos

I wouldn’t exactly call it my movie but I did most of the work. It’s a film made as a class project in film class at college with Ephraim A. Ritikos, the one and the same who co-produced my first album. But that was then, now is now. Here’s the movie.

It’s not perfect, I know. Its a tad too short due to low content. The limit for the assignment is 10 minutes anyways. The sound isnt that great because I recorded at home using a mic without an amplifier. At least the subtitles are there.

    A bit of production info….

The whole thing was inspired by a video about sushi that has been circulated on the internet. I don’t mean to steal ideas but the concept is amusing.
Most of the scenes were taken at Muthu’s restaurant, Bangsar. Roshan Rasiah, a friend of ours, is in good terms with the waiters there. We also managed to borrow a waiter uniform from one of them, what luck. The money spent on the entire production is equals to all the food we ate, which comes up to less about RM20. The camera, costumes, and music were all borrowed.
The chasing scene was done at Bangsar Sports Complex. Shooting it outside of Muthu’s can be illegal (we don’t have a permit), obstructing and embarassing. The scene after the credits were not used as it was taken at night. We were completely oblivious to the lighting problems at that time. We just wanted to get it done.

The blonde Chinese dude is a HELP UC student who hails from China, directly. Communicating with him was a bit of a hassle so his contribution was kept at minimal. He played his role flawlessly, anyway.

At this point, I have no idea what my film lecturer, Mr. Zan Azlee, has to say about this film. I hope he would like it; he was planning to screen at HELP UC’s theatrette and I think he’s even gonna submit our assignments to some competition. Yikes.

Disclaimer: this film is in no way intended to portray negative imagery of Muthu’s Restaurant Bangsar or its workers.

    2. Quite ok what. Funny in places. Some more educational as well.

Opinions (not like you asked for them)
      - You didn’t really need a narration since the subtitles actually work quite well.
      - Nice concept (even if you were inspired by someone else). So, when are we going to see “How to buy a durian”?
      - Call it a Malaysian documentary, but where’s your sense of muhibbah? Got Ah Chong, got Mutu, but no Ali in your cast. Aiyah, never meet quota loh, sure get into trouble with censorship board… ;)

    6. To balajoe: thanks dude!

To dzof: Hey its dzof!! Guy from PPS podcasts! Thanks for dropping by. If no narration, it would either be silence or distorted crowd noise. Haha, why not chor tai ti or pasar malam? Oh sorry about that muhibah part, at least my lecturer is Malay, fair enough?

      To Roy: Yup yup.. thanks!

To Darkstalker: Nah he doesn’t. Yeah, I didn’t have time to polish the narration. Biased? Ooopss.. sorry, didn’t occur to me. Thanks for watching anways.

    7. By the way, I’ve tagged you. Go to my blog, see what’s up, and do it here, if you don’t mind/have the time. =P

PS – Pity he doesn’t call himself Effy anymore. I still say it sounds effeminate. Like a girl. XD

PPS – I forgot to mention that Alternative Method No. 1 To Paying was awesome and a technique I was unfamiliar with. I shall have to try it out sometime.
