I had to write this essay for my Communication Theory class. This is crapping skills put the test.

Of the four values of communication, personal impact would be the most important in my opinion. Talking with people is one of the fundamentals of personal development. Only through communication that a person learns, experiences, and understands the world as part of growing into a mature adult. A child with nobody to talk to will only end up behaving like an animal. None can learn without any external lines of communication.

Communication allows for the passing of ideas, concepts and knowledge to be shared among fellow humans. Through this process, a person grows, becoming part of society; a collection of these societies ultimately add up to the global populace. Also, it is by talking with people that one attains an understanding of self-image. We can see ourselves differently if only revealed as a different perspective via communication.

In addition to that, people who lack proper interpersonal communication are more likely to succumb to physiological ailments. According to study, there are cases of such victims caused by loneliness. Hence, it is essential that a human being maintain lines of communication to preserve personal well-being. For the same reason, solitary confinement is used as a form of punishment.

On the other hand, professional impact would be the least important among the four stated. This is due to the fact that it is only applicable to the corporate world and the intellectual upper-class. Centuries ago, it would not exist at all whereas human communication is still essentially the same. The personal impact of communication values does not rely on the current state of the world at any time in recorded history.

Communication may play a significant role in organizational culture but in the bigger picture, organizations are not a natural part of a human life. Professional careers are only an aspect of life in the modern world. The effect of communication on personal development is more important than how it is needed in the professional world.

For example, the way politicians need effective communication to serve their purpose. Communication is important in that field only because of the way the world relies on politics to run nations. But communication as a means of human relations in the name of social progress is universal. Therefore, the professional impact value would be the least important.
